From Old Win Guy But This Is For Mac
In this episode, I will help determine if buying an old Apple Mac Pro is worth it in 2015. This video is meant for people considering the purchase of a Mac Pro 1,1 as their first, or perhaps you.
I found the interface to be difficult to navigate and I did not like the appearance or overall feel of the product itself (what the eff is with the standard keyboards and mice?).However! I have recently begun an Arts degree and I am definitely noting the extreme positives in owning a Mac Desktop or Laptop, not to mention in most Arts fields they are the industry standard. I STILL don’t like how it’s not as easy to disable Apple programs I won’t use (however I have never had my own and I don’t wish to change too many features on friends or uni ones). I also work in Retail Electronics store, and I get so many parents saying “I need a mac” which I usually end up facepalming as “oh my son/daughter just told me to get it”.

No A/V, no malware protection of any kind,, and have never got infected If I can do it, so can you. But if your afrraid, get a Mac Of course we know their not that safe, since dumb users still typed their passwords in so 600,000 Macs got infected by the FlashBack Trojan. *rolls eyes* Seems whatever you do, they’ll never be sensible users out there. I have been Windows faithful since I first used a Mac Desktop in 2001it was terrible.
MacBooks don’t even come in a 17inch screen. I have 3GB of RAM on an NVidia card, which is not a Mac option. To get the i7 quad core at 2.6GHz you have to buy the most expensive MacBook Pro, which STARTS at $1999. The actual price of a MacBook Pro with comparable hardware is $2599.
Apple says that if I had a real thunderbolt monitor from apple, I would be able to drive this one in addition to that but sadly I do not so back it goes. Conclusion Run Windows at 1920×1200 on your Retina Screen. Reasoning If you run native retina resolution (2880×1440) and set your fonts to 200%, you’ll find strange behavior with windows. Certain dialogs (like the file open dialog) run incorrectly as well as many other anomalies. My experience has been that the native retina screen does a great job of presenting 1920×1200 so that is my choice. Pictures are great, speed is great, everything works well. It also means I don’t have to change the font s when I go back in forth between external monitors and my notebook.
My Asus RoG was ~$1500. I think being $1099 cheaper constitutes “more affordable”. And before you start spouting gamer nonsense, the primary use of my laptop is IT workdatabases, virtual machines, etc.
Number 15 is true for stock software, but have you ever tried torrenting? I’ve used mac and pc for years, built with them, fixed them, and dealt with their issues. Really it is based on personal preference whichever os you use, but dont think apple will ever be formally introduced to the business percentage of computers until they significantly lower prices. First, if your know what you’re doing, you will not get viruses on a PC. Secondly, my PC fully boots in or around 7 seconds. File sharing? Everyone uses cloud drives and social media, no difference in PC and Mac.
Do you understand now why Mac is better? Seen sites come and go, but not one infection on Mac, unless users do something dumb like type in their password for something they have no idea what they just did.
In the end, I got it working by installing Windows 8 then upgrading to 8.1. Read on for the best Mac apps I’ve discovered so far Applications Having become accustomed to Windows’ options, this was perhaps the hardest part of switching across. I didn’t know every great app off the top of my head anymore, nor is there a solution like to install all of the basics I required. Now that I’ve settled in and found a few, I have come to the conclusion that the quality of applications on Mac compared to those on Windows is much higher in general, especially in the UI/UX department. Developers seem to put more time and thought into how users will use them and the community surrounding many of them is extremely supportive, often willing to pay a good price for a quality application. I’m only using a handful of apps so far, but here’s the ones I’ve fallen in love with: Airmail I’ve fruitlessly searched for a good quality email application for years on Windows but have never found it. Outlook is terrible and the alternatives such as Thunderbird really aren’t that great.
After this, there will be no more hidden, system, or read-only directories left. If you can't see your user folders after this, then they just aren't there, despite what anyone has told you. It's not magic. If they're not there at this point, then either they were deleted or the disk is failing and they are not recoverable without paying a company at least $100, and up to $1,000, to recover the data. [EDIT] If you get any permission errors or unauthorized access errors, then you will have to set permissions on the file system on the external drive. Let me know and I can direct you through that. I ran the cmd.exe from commandprompt (as administrator) and it seemed like the chkdsk reported no errors, but then the attrib thing couldn't find any files it said.
There is no way to argue with any veracity that Disney and Lucasfilm don't qualify as pros because they won't upgrade the hardware fleet with RAM, new processors, and faster video cards. Many will buy the Mac Pro when it ships -- but with no intent to upgrade them at all. Wanting to upgrade your Mac doesn't make you a 'Pro,' and being a 'Pro' doesn't mean you want to upgrade your Mac.
These Mac models support the 64-bit version of Windows 10 Home or Pro edition installed with Boot Camp. Use to find out which Mac you have, then see if it's on this list: • MacBook Pro (2012 and later) • MacBook Air (2012 and later) • MacBook (2015 and later) • iMac Pro (2017) • iMac (2012 and later)* • Mac mini (2012 and later) • Mac mini Server (Late 2012) • Mac Pro (Late 2013) * on iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), or iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) configured with 3TB hard drives. You need a Microsoft Windows disk image (ISO) or installation media containing a 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows 10 Home or Pro edition. If you're installing Windows for the first time, use a full version, not an upgrade. When you buy Windows, it comes as a disk image file (ISO) that you download, or as an installation disc or USB flash drive. If you download Windows, make sure that you do so only from the.
On the productivity front, it’s liberating to be free of Microsoft Office altogether. I’ve never been particularly fond of the slow, bloated feel of the desktop applications and barely use many of the more advanced features. The OS X mail application works with my Microsoft Exchange email, Pages can open any Word documents I’m sent and Numbers is perfectly fine with Excel spreadsheets. Occasionally there’s a snag converting a document but it’s nothing Google Drive can’t fix. Spaces are literally changing the way I work on my laptop, too. They’re great for helping separate projects from each other or work apps from personal apps. I keep one open with Mail, Twitter and other social networks and others for work and just switch between them as required.
And I'm just 1 guy. I have many peers who do the same for their friends and clients. I could easily estimate over 3000+ computers. I would argue the type of people answering your poll here are 'unlikely' to be upgraders. If you ran the same poll on Barefeats - it would probably be close to 100% upgrade their RAM on their own.
Apple says that if I had a real thunderbolt monitor from apple, I would be able to drive this one in addition to that but sadly I do not so back it goes. Download mac os x for windows. There is really no technical reason why Mac OS could not run on a 2010 Intel CPU. These are decisions made at the top of the company.
Mac download folder. Thanks for watching.
When Business Insider published a piece a little while back saying that Microsoft's Surface Book laptop might be a better buy for most people than the newest MacBook Pro models, we got some hate mail from the Apple crowd. Well, guess what? The world has moved on. And it's less of a 'choice' than ever before.
But then requires a $15US one time purchase. ➤ It doesn’t have ton of features but it’s extremely useful for local web development. Anvil helps manage multiple development sites on your local machine by creating local ‘.dev’ websites you can access. Rather than mess around with config files, Anvil does the work for you. ➤ Sublime Text 3 When it comes to writing code or simply editing text, the consensus seems to be that Sublime Text is the best tool for everything and I’d agree with that statement.
Steve Jobs with the original iMac in 1998. Mousse Mousse/Reuters When I was a kid in the late 1990s, most everyone I knew had a Windows 95 PC — myself included. But I had this one friend whose family owned a Mac, one of those multicolored iMacs that were the company's first big product launch. I loved video games, and he loved video games, but he especially loved games on his Mac. Well, one game in particular: 'Marathon,' a first-person shooter, which was only for the Mac. We got into fierce, weeklong arguments about it, in the way that only 10-year-olds can. He said the Mac may have less software, but what was there was simply better.
Vista was version 6, and had more bugs than a Lower East Side tenement, so I will pass on any warmed-over versions. Also, I have had the current Mac for almost 4 years now, and haven't had nearly as many issues with it than I had with my PCs. And every peripheral I ever attached to it, from thumb drive, to scanner, to printer, to whatever worked. Yes, I may have had to get drivers, but they work. Unlike Windows, where unless you have an authentic signed driver, the peripheral may not work. The interface may be different, but it takes little getting used to.
Maybe I’ll buy it again if I read better things but likely I’ll wait until the Kaby Lake version comes out and hopefully they have different discrete graphic options. I also wrote up some details on a regarding how to connect external monitors and performance (refresh rates). TLDR; • Impossible to get 4K external monitor working at 60Mhz (Only 30Mhz), DisplayPort or HDMI • DisplayPort monitors only work when going through (not directly plugged to USBC –> Thunderbolt2 Apple cable –> Belkin Dock –> DisplayPort Little to Big DisplayPort cable • 3K (2560×1600) external monitor works at 60Mhz with HDMI only The Experiments and Results I called Apple Support regarding how to get my new MacBook Pro 15 (with TouchBar, 4MB Video memory, 16GB RAM) to work with external display port monitors. They said that IS NOT supported. On my older macbook 15 (version before the touchbar) I could drive just one 4K DisplayPort monitor directly from my Thunderbolt2 port at 60Mhz (that does not work at all on new Macbook Pro 15 with touch bar, nothing comes on display).
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by just how many exist for Mac, especially with Steam’s recent push to get app developers to write for both Windows and Mac. A good half of my collection has an official Mac version of their game, but for the other half I’ve taken to running them in a virtual machine, which works surprisingly well. In my very unscientific tests, I was able to install Civilization V in a virtual machine and play at full graphics quality without any issues with frame rate, which was impressive. I’d guess other games such as first person shooters wouldn’t work quite so well, but there’s always Apple’s own to help with that. It’s often said that Apple devices ‘just work’; something I’m finding to be true with OS X. AirPlay is especially powerful and works perfectly if you have other Apple devices (like an Apple TV) for quickly duplicating the screen with the TV for watching a movie. Other simple touches in OS X, such as having a centralised contacts directory that other applications can access makes using other applications seamless. The bad There are some oddities that are painful at first.
Hi everyone, im new here and in need of help. I recently purchased a new laptop (Windows 8), we put the hard disk from my old slow laptop (win XP) that stopped working into a 'sata enclosure'. When I attached it, I cant find my personal files. Its like the space is taken up but my important files cant be seen!!
That said, you have made it very clear what you are after from YOUR stand point but don't assume every single 'Pro' user has the same exact criteria as you or your criteria are even a majority of views for the target audience. From Apple's perspective to me it makes the most sense to optimize hardware and software to provide the best experience which includes specifications of models. There is absolutely no reason to allow a user to upgrade for their model from my perspective. I am driving my opinion from the fact that a majority do not want to nor need to do this. Yes there is a small percent that will not like this but they have Windows based PC builds they can fill their need from. Does not mean Apple needs to have this.
I’m only using a handful of apps so far, but here’s the ones I’ve fallen in love with: Airmail I’ve fruitlessly searched for a good quality email application for years on Windows but have never found it. Outlook is terrible and the alternatives such as Thunderbird really aren’t that great.
Hey Mike, I totally disagree with your analysis of the number of people upgrading RAM. I know for a fact that number is much much higher. Apple charges 3x the price for RAM upgrades.
I keep one open with Mail, Twitter and other social networks and others for work and just switch between them as required. Being able to separate work applications from personal ones is powerful for helping focus on the task at hand. I’m extremely impressed with power management more than anything else. Apple says that the 15″ Retina MacBook will last around eight hours on battery and have found that Apple’s estimates are pretty accurate; I can get just over 8 hours when using Safari instead of Chrome for browsing the web and avoiding heavy energy draining applications.

4) My HP has a faster processor (i7) vs the i5 that came in the MAC. It also has two separate graphics chips, one intel and one radeon, similar to how MACS are set up. It was roughly half the price of the MAC. Mostly I use the MAC for GarageBand and to surf the net or watch movies while I’m lounging around. My last “thing” with Apple would be that I hear they are eliminating their upgradability. Soldered-in RAM and Non-removable batteries and such. Thats a money play that is not only annoying but downright irresponsible when you consider the extra landfill space that these non-upgradeable machines wiil use.
I think being $1099 cheaper constitutes “more affordable”. And before you start spouting gamer nonsense, the primary use of my laptop is IT workdatabases, virtual machines, etc. Exidos: You can’t just say that PC is better, you have to explain it. Otherwise you make a fool of yourself.
That said, applications that are installed using the Mac App Store simply install themselves without requiring any drag-ad-drop or DMG mounting. Obviously this is Apple’s preferred method of distribution but I’ve found many application developers aren’t using it yet. I’m still yet to figure out how to manage windows properly without Windows’ “snap” functionality which allows you to drag an application to the side of the screen and it will automatically take up half of the screen. The OS X “maximize” button doesn’t seem to actually work properly and infuriatingly tends to just stretch an app up and down. There is a full screen button, indicated by two arrows on the upper right of a window, which essentially maximizes the window but hides all others behind a type of ‘stage’ view.
Processor Throughput 3. Energy Efficiency 4. Software Support 5. Noise Level 6. Maintenance Costs 7. Initial Cost Hopefully, you will find this video helpful in deciding whether or not an 2006 Mac Pro is worth buying today.
At the time, moving to OpenGL allowed Apple to take advantage of existing work already done to build software that enabled hardware acceleration on a variety of different GPUs. Fifteen years later, however, Apple's iOS had become the largest platform of uniform mobile hardware.
Not to mention being in business and managing everything from payroll, Excel, Quickbooks, estimates, invoicing, spreadsheets and everything all in one place. PC wins, hands down! This Mac vs PC crap is a joke. Mac is a johnny-come-lately and has not been able to keep up.
Leo advises backing up his data, format the hard drive and then update to El Capitan. Dave should download El Capitan first and put it on a USB Key. He can even make it a bootable installer. Replacing that hard drive with an SSD could really speed it up, but it's not easy to do.
I would argue the type of people answering your poll here are 'unlikely' to be upgraders. If you ran the same poll on Barefeats - it would probably be close to 100% upgrade their RAM on their own. How much data do you think 22 service techs spanning 18 states and 15 years has? Way, way more than this. Regarding the polling of Apple store visitors from a few years back, that is as average Apple customer as you can literally get. Your data isn't wrong, but like the Barefeats readers you speak of, it is skewed the wrong way from a polled population standpoint. It's like asking AppleInsider readers how many have done upgrades.
