Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Dragon Dictate 3.0 (Mac) (Old Version). I got this because I broke my arm and couldn't write. After a week of trying to use it, I've finally given up and I'll be returning it shortly. I live on my Mac, so Dragon is really great. A friend of mine used Dragon to control his Mac while his.
Version 6 just landed and I've been using the heck out of it. The short version of this story is that dictation and usability improvements make both a great product to get in on if you want to get serious about dictation and a worthy upgrade for existing users.
Last week, I broke my right arm. And let me definitely confirm that this slows down the family history research process. When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, right? So I've turned this setback to good use. Awhile back I was researching various options to help me transcribe the mountains of handwritten documents I've accumulated over the years and came across voice dictation software, but dismissed it as being too expensive. A day or two of hunting and pecking with my left hand quickly justified the expense.
10 Ways to Write Faster and Better With Dragon Naturally Speaking I quickly learned how to be a faster and better writer with Dragon Naturally Speaking; my only regret is I waited so long to use speech recognition software in my work. I was introduced to Dragon Naturally Speaking more than five years ago but I hesitated to invest in it because I didn’t think it would work for me. Boy, was I wrong!
X-ray showing broken bone This blog post is written using Dragon Dictate voice recognition software for Mac. On Sunday I broke my right arm just below the shoulder. Although I have insurance, it made more sense to try dictation software to see if I could continue working. I’m sure with practice get faster, but it goes at this speed the whole time, I’m going to be unable to be productive. For example that last sentence I dictated with only one mistake–the software thought I said reductive instead of productive.
• The toolkit for WSR we subsequently developed was Microsoft certified in 2008 for Vista and subsequently for Windows 7 and now Windows 8 and 8.1. It is now up to Version 3. • Since 2007 we had been posting helpful responses and when appropriate to help someone, links to the toolkit. For example, maybe people using WSR wish to take notes or dictate their voice into a digital recorder.
Not only had I heard about way back in 2011, I actually published a guest post here on Blossom (then called Quips and Tips for Successful Writers) about Dragon. Sharon Hurley Hall was the writer who shared her tips on using speech recognition software for writing blog posts and magazine articles. Here’s one reader’s comment about Dragon for writers. “Thanks for this interesting article on Dragon Naturally Speaking,” says Marv on (Shirley’s article).
Do I sound bitter?:-) Marty Markoe. Marty, forgive me, will this macro work while voice recognition is running, and not otherwise? Perhaps the link you provided explains that, but since that small point is so fundamental I'm assuming it isn't exactly explained, and so am asking ahead of time. That is, proceeding cautiously but straight ahead.: ) WSRMacros only work with WSR running. The macro command is named by you.
• Select Set up your microphone. • Choose the type of microphone you are using. Choose Other if you are using the standard built-in microphone on your device and tap or click Next. • Read the text in the Set Up Your Microphone screen.
I can have it posted on my blog – along with images and resources for readers – within 30 minutes. This saves me one hour every morning. That translates to at least five hours a week. Since I earn about $40 per hour, I can potentially use that time to make an extra $200 every week. Speech recognition software reveals my writing peccadillos in new ways Dragon is not only teaching me how to write faster, it’s also revealing my weaknesses as a writer. For example, I’m learning through speech recognition software how often I use commas and exclamation marks! I actually already knew that I overuse exclamation marks, so Dragon merely reinforced this insight into my own writing.
I use every day. I think a lot of people that gave up on dictation 10 years ago are missing out. If that's you, check out the new Dragon.
I see that I’m not alone, but it doesn’t make me feel a whole lot better. Since this is clearly not a new problem, I think it’s dishonest for Nuance to keep selling this product.
However, even without an optical drive, Dragon may be installed easily enough. Using another computer with an optical drive, copy the contents of the Dragon DVD media onto a USB memory stick (with a minimum 4 GB capacity) or a computer that is accessible by the ultra book via a network connection. On the ultra book, insert the USB memory stick or access a network drive containing a copy of the Dragon DVD. Run the setup.exe file. Installation should proceed normally. Speakeasy Solutions Inc., in our 17th year of business, provides complete speech recognition, digital voice dictation and transcription solutions.
For example that last sentence I dictated with only one mistake–the software thought I said reductive instead of productive. ‘armless fun So how did I break my arm, you ask. Well, I was off road motorcycling when I came across a log lying at 45° across the path. What I should have done was stopped all ridden round it, but instead I tried to ride straight over it.
• If the problem continues, please try uninstalling and reinstalling Dictate. For steps on uninstalling Dictate, please see. For steps on installing Dictate, please see.
Then we could sit back, yack on the phone, and get crisp, perfect transcriptions delivered to us. Writers often ask me if that’s possible. I have to tell them we’re not there yet, for several reasons: • Everyone’s voice is different. It’s a big challenge for software to handle two different voices in rapid-fire succession.
With voice dictation software, all you have to do is focus on what you're reading. Your transcription accuracy also improves since your eyes don't have to switch back and forth from one document to the other, and you are less likely to lose your place. One caveat--you probably won't produce a literal transcription of your historical document with all its strange spellings, because Dragon transcribes what it hears into modern standard English. I think that if you study the editing commands you can have more control over the vagaries of your ancestors' spelling and punctuation, but I wanted to jump right in.perfection can wait! I also discovered a bonus use for Dragon--its a great tool for taking research notes! I was looking for several families in the NY land indexes on FamilySearch yesterday and noticed that if I read the index entry (and full citation) out loud, I automatically produced a neat 'to do' list for this class of records. No more stopping and starting each time I find an entry of interest so I can write it down.
Trying Dragon Slayer From Dutch Bros
I’m sure they’re trying to fix the problem, but in the meantime it appears that we deserve a significant rebate. This will be bad publicity when word gets out. Wayne, Yes, thank you. This past summer I re-downloaded Dragon + recently downloaded the update. (Re-loading means having to re-input all auto-texts!). The biggest problem, really, is that the cursor will sometimes jump to an earlier part of the dictation. If I’m not watching the screen, I’m suddenly dictating in the middle of a prior page!
I’ve used both Windows and Mac versions for years, and they’re both superb. For example, the latest Dictate for Mac version 6 is phenomenal! I don’t think it has made a single mistake for me yet, except for rendering proper names that may sound like something else.
Thanks for your work on VR. I find that using it, I can playact-out dialogue, and it seems to result in authentic-sounding human interaction; my writing peers say it's what I'm best at. I'm sure others have even better reasons for being grateful, like paralysis and blindness! Hey this is nice service, Microsoft actually contacted me regarding my question.

They also offer the long-distance (green mode) dictation functionality and the ability to use accessibility devices such as foot pedals which may or may not be of interest. The TableMike One is a stripped-down version of the TableMike – no release date as yet. This may not be on the market for a while and will likely hit Europe first. I cannot pick between the FlexyMike and TableMike as they are completely different products with varying usage cases. The TableMike is ideal for desktop dictation use but not such a good option for travel and of no use for transcription. The FlexyMike is ideal for voice recorders/transcription but also requires a USB adapter for computer use such as, for instance, the SpeechWare USB MultiAdapter (if you do not have a standard 3.5 mm mic-in connector available; I would often going for USB, though, due to the poor quality of many built-in PC soundcards). Which one you choose is really dependant on how you will use it.
(Meaning without the USB MultiAdapter?) So there is no need to buy the MultiAdapter if you use this only as a transcription mic? I have a Sony ICD-UX560 that I’d love to use with this if it works that well. My main use case would be transcription of recordings made while walking outside. Also, you mention that you need an adapter when using the FlexyMike SEC with a smartphone, does it come with a lightning adapter necessary for the newer iPhones that lack a headphone jack?
This saves me one hour every morning. That translates to at least five hours a week. Since I earn about $40 per hour, I can potentially use that time to make an extra $200 every week. Microphone is not working in Dictate Problem: The microphone is not working when using MacSpeech Dictate or Dragon Dictate for Mac. Solution: There are multiple reasons why the microphone may not be working. Please attempt the following suggestions: • Confirm that the user is in a quiet area without too much background noise. • Verify that the headset being used is a supported MacSpeech-certified headset. • Try creating a new profile when first launching Dictate. Note: When creating the new profile, make sure the microphone is properly selected to the 'USB microphone'. Sometimes the microphone will be set to 'Built-In microphone' by default.
In order to reduce their weight, a number of lightweight notebook computers (often referred to as ultra books) do not contain an optical drive. Various applications, such as Microsoft Office, are installed via download, therefore not requiring an optical drive. Other applications, such as Dragon® Medical Practice Edition or Dragon NaturallySpeaking, must be installed from their DVD media, requiring the use of an optical drive.
Dictation Speed and Accuracy Every version of Dragon Dictate boasts improved accuracy. Nuance reports this update improves accuracy by 15%. So long as I dictate complete sentences and don't try to change course in the middle of a thought, I was already getting very high accuracy with version 5. Indeed, this is the secret to all dictation. If you give the application clear enough enunciation and context, Dragon can be extremely accurate. With a 1,000 word dictation, I normally have 5-10 corrections. Let's call it 99%.
Dragon Naturally Speaking doesn’t decrease your skills as a writer. Dictating into speech recognition software can actually improve your writing and editing skills, help you write faster and better, and make you a more productive writer. Dictating your thoughts will help you write more words, sentences, paragraphs, articles, blog posts, chapters, and books than you could ever do by typing alone. 10 Ways to Write Faster and Better With Dragon Naturally Speaking Even though I’d heard writers talk about speech recognition software on various productivity and writing podcasts, I didn’t think it would work for me.
By the way I’m finding the course very useful. Thanks Like •. Hi Patrick, glad you are finding the course useful. I think there is a little confusion in the product description of the FlexyMike – the jack is not compatible with any modern Android phones (or iPhones, MacBook Pros and so on for that matter). It is only compatible with voice recorders and PCs (such as desktop computers) which have separate analog audio inputs. You will need a USB adapter for your MacBook Pro as the laptop has a 3.5 mm “combi” socket.
I Broke My Arm So Am Trying Dragon Dictate Software For Mac
Put simply, the words are showing up on the screen faster, making dictation easier. There are a couple reasons for this. One is that the engine is just faster. Another is some underlying technology improvements with the way Dragon views words on your screen.
In Dragon windows, click or tap to close the window. If only Dragon's 'avatar' is showing, click or tap during processing to stop it. For help with Dragon states, see If you notice limitations using Windows Modern view Dragon is primarily a Windows desktop program and consequently the following limitations apply in the Windows Modern view: • If you switch back to Windows Modern view after Dragon switches to the Windows desktop to display one of its windows, Dragon's windows remain visible only on the desktop. To switch back to desktop view, say 'Cancel' and then 'Switch to Desktop' or press the Windows key. • If you leave Dragon's Settings window open when you switch to Windows Modern screens, Dragon does not display at all in the modern user interface.
If I watch Dragon type my dictation on the computer screen in front of me, I tend to keep going back and editing what I just wrote. This is not a good tip for writing faster and and better. It’s much more productive and efficient to find flow and write that first draft, and then edit later. Speaking encourages me to write from the heart I didn’t expect to write differently with speech recognition software, and I really didn’t expect Dragon Naturally Speaking to change my writing voice. I’ve found that my writing is more creative and expressive when I dictate my articles than when I’m simply typing. I’m not sure why this is. It’s possibly because when I’m typing my fingers can’t keep up with my brain so I can’t get everything on the screen.
I myself have kept training to a minimal—the newer versions don’t seem to require it as much. Thinking beyond my own situation, I suspect that the existence of voice recognition just might be one factor for employers to consider when weighing “open office” against quieter individual offices, where background noise can be kept to a minimum. As for ebooks, I continue to hope that someday both iOS and Android voice recognition will improve and can be used more reliably for annotating e-books. Also, I wonder if the day will come when we can dictate at least simple emails to Alexa-based devices. So what are your own thoughts on the pros and cons of voice recognition, especially if you’re using it already?

I freely admit to being dazzled by the so-called BSOs (bright objects), so anything that keeps me focused on one thing at a time is a worthwhile investment!
If you’re on the fence about whether or not you should buy Dragon, I encourage you to try it. What have you got to lose? You can always return it and get your money back if it doesn’t work for you! 10 Ways Dragon Helps Me Write Faster and Better. Yes, I am “writing” this blog post with Dragon’s speech recognition software 🙂 Here’s the number one reason I decided to buy speech recognition software: speaking speed versus typing speed. I can talk 110-150 words per minute – but I can only type about 50 words per minute. Which leads me to my first tip for writing faster with Dragon Naturally Speaking 1.
After reading Scott’s review of the FlexyMike, seeing the quick response of SpeechWare to questions raised here, and researching the company’s online reputation (impressive) I decided to buy. The quick answer to this tale is that the official Canadian distributor is in Toronto (vocalinks.com) and they have the 2nd generation in stock at $189Can (~150US). Although it was not reflected on their webpage this morning I received confirmation directly from the president of the firm within minutes that they do have it in stock. But it wasn’t easy getting that far. The Amazon.ca page does not mention the cheaper and presumably faster Canadian source and instead list SpeechWare as the seller at a higher cost.
