Wd My Book Essential 1tb Driver For Mac
Hey, I'm having problems with my 1 TB WD My Book Essential Drive (External USB HDD). I've only had it for a couple months and now it's not showing up on my Macbook Pro.
I really don't think the drive is damaged as I've been able to access data on it before and haven't done anything to it that would physically damage the drive since then. I did plug in this drive to my Xbox 360 and customized it to be used as an external hard drive, but all my data was retained (I checked after doing it). I don't know if that would have an effect on it, but even then, when I plugged it back into my computer, it would take 30 min or so before my Mac would even mount the drive (it did recognize it as a device though). Any help would be appreciated. If you need any additional info, let me know. OS: Mac OS X 'Snow Leopard' 10.6.2 Mac: MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz Early 2008. No matter how many times I unplug it/ plug it in or even switch cables, the drive still doesn't want to be recognized. Hello, This is because the ' My book essentia' is a NTFS (windows) Drive and you are using a mac, in orde to use this drive you will have to format it to HFS (mac os extended journaled ) in a GUID partition, Please follow the guide below on how to do this, (choose your OS first) Also if you do not like that (annoying) software, you are able to disable it, if you do not want the software use the guide below on how to disable the virtual cd with smart ware Please try this, it should work Greets Random WD Fan. Hi I just bought this drive and since I run a Imac I did reformat to the Mac standard format right from the get go. I then saw a message telling me that there was an update to the firmware available. I said Great!!! And downloaded the firmware and followed the instruction to the letter( disconnecting and rebooting the computer and reconnecting the drive. My Imac did not even the presence of the drive.
My computer doesn't notice the drive and the drive doesn't realize it is connected to a computer. After 30 minutes or so, the drive shows a white light meaning that it is on, but nothing after that. No matter how many times I unplug it/ plug it in or even switch cables, the drive still doesn't want to be recognized.
What happens is I plug in my drive to power and the drive starts spinning up. That's all that happens, there's no lights indicating that it is doing something or even on. I then plug it into my Macbook Pro and nothing happens still. My computer doesn't notice the drive and the drive doesn't realize it is connected to a computer. After 30 minutes or so, the drive shows a white light meaning that it is on, but nothing after that.
• The hard drive will be detected and installed automatically. A drive icon will be mounted to the desktop and the drive will be ready for use.
LATEST: My Book Essentials not being recogonized by Win 7 Went out and bought a program (paragon) to have a better look at this problem namely My Book Essential not showing up in Explorer on a PC using Win 7 OS. It does show up ok on 2 other PCs which use XP OS with all folders etc. (after copying content to the drive) The program which I used on the PC running Win 7 showed all content in its Disk managemnent portion. So everything is on the Disk but Win7 still does not show in Win Explorer. As a last resort tried do a firmware upgrade on the Win PC with following msge “Application encountered an unexpected error and is now exiting” Mine is not a unique problem I have an identical situation with a 2nd external drive namely a KASER 250GB Stoirage Vault which has a WD HD in it.

Thanks It seems that there is a lot of people with the same situation with the firmwares on all kinds of WD drives. It looks like they are sabotaging themselves. Hi, I have a WD My Book Essential 1.5TB.
I'm sorry you're going through such trouble with your drive. Did you remember doing anything out of the ordinary before or when this happened, or to have heard any unusual sounds/noises coming from the drive? The guys have given you some pretty decent advice. You should also try the drive with a different USB cable and preferably with a different computer as well as @scout_03 has suggested and try @sorrad2002's solutions as well, because reinstalling the drivers might also help. Have you had similar problem with other USB storage devices since this has happened? Hope that helps.

Western Digital WD10000H1U-00 1TB This external drive is fast and works fine. I use it for image back up of every SSD I have on every desktop that I have. I switch these drives among all 3 desktops to create a total of 9 images for 3 machines. This assures that every SDD will boot up and work on each machine, something that is not guaranteed, even on the same desktop models. The SSD's average 100GB of data each.
